Lessons and Education
Private Lessons: For the past many years, I teach private lessons in wire strung and nylon strung lever harp, hammered dulcimer, wooden flute and whistle at the Center for Irish Music in St. Paul. Their website is http://www.centerforirishmusic.org/
If you are interested in lessons, please email me directly. (See the contact page)
Workshops: I offer group workshops and lecture demonstrations for all levels on the early Gaelic Harp, traditional Celtic nylon strung lever harp, wooden flute, hammered dulcimer as well Irish and Scottish music history. Contact me for further details.
School Demonstrations: As a teacher I have great love of sharing my experiences as a traditional musician with students of all ages by visiting pre-school through university classrooms. My background in ethno-musicology proves valuable in the culturally diverse schools that I visit allowing me to draw comparisons that resonate with the class. K-12th grade visits generally lasts 45 minutes to an and includes a fluid combination of the following-
Demonstration: Instruments include harp, dulcimer, whistle, flute, and pipes. I have found it very useful to be able to play multiple instruments, especially for the youngest students, as it makes it easy to keep them engaged and interested.
Conversation: Playing live music for classes creates lively and thoughtful discussion and opportunities to explore diverse facets of music, culture, history and even science. Students have noticed many similarities between my traditional instruments and instruments with which they are more familiar. I highlight how certain music and/or instruments are similar to other instruments from around the world and relate these to the student's experience and culture.
Please contact me directly to arrange either workshops or classroom visits or have any questions!
